This article explores the concept of Fashion. Its main definition is a form of self-expression and individual autonomy, encompassing apparel, accessories, and lifestyle. Fashion includes everything from hairstyles and makeup to body posture and fashion. Essentially, fashion is about trending styles and looks. People use fashion to express themselves and their personal style, but it can also be a repressive force on society. But what exactly is Fashion, and what is its purpose?
Fashion is a social process
Fashion is a complex and social process. As a social phenomenon, it provides an aesthetic appearance for a group. It involves the changing of clothing, habits, and cultural and religious acts. According to Lowery, “Fashion is the acceptance and dissemination of new styles and trends.” In simple terms, clothing refers to real objects made of fabric or other materials that a person wears to express his or her style and personality.
It is a form of self-expression
For centuries, people have used fashion as a form of self-expression. However, originality often results in criticism from other people, and dressing differently can be difficult if you’re not comfortable with a specific look. Fashion designer Gianni Versace once famously said, “Don’t let fashion own you.”
It is a medium for expressing opinions
Clothing serves as an important part of a human’s identity and culture. It protects us from the elements, enables us to negotiate our environment, and defines our gender. In addition to its function as a protective barrier, clothing can also be an important means of constructing lines of culture and gender. The complexities of clothing are discussed in Roland Barthes’ The Language of Fashion, edited by Andy Stafford and published by Berg.
